43rd POWER SOURCES CONFERENCE

ASB-Group participated to the 43rd POWER SOURCES CONFERENCE
7-10 July 2008, at Philadelphia, PA, USA

The two following papers were presented and raised interest of the public on the state of the art of the R&D studies:
• Comparison of the different anode technologies used in Thermal Batteries,
• Thin film oxide cathode for Thermal Batteries.

The US subsidiary of ASB-Group, ATB Advanced Thermal Batteries Inc. exhibited there also with significant success.

An interview with Michel HAINAUT, C.E.O. of ASB

"Thermal Batteries offer significant advantages which deserve to be exploited in diverse markets."

Mr. Hainaut, you have been the CEO of ASB for three years. Could you please present your new company in USA to us?

"Advanced Thermal Batteries (ATB Inc.) is the result of the acquisition, by ASB, of the thermal battery activities of Saft America. It is therefore based in Baltimore, Maryland. With the support of ASB, this company offers the same standards of high quality, product performance and customer support that our clients have come to expect. ATB Inc. is already able to provide our US defense industry partners with design and manufacture capabilities. ATB Inc. is an American company, satisfying the requirements of the US military market. We aim to expand our position as a key supplier to the US thermal battery market."

Eurosatory is an excellent opportunity to introduce a new range of products.

"It is true that this is a great opportunity to release the result of one of our self-funded research programs: "smart" batteries. These combine innovations in both the manufacturing process and electrochemistry, in order to miniaturize the thermal battery package. The logic behind this new product range is to meet the rising demand for power supplies integrated into next generation smart munitions. The significant advantages of thermal batteries have always been particularly well suited to battlefield requirements: they are now available in very small volumes."

How do these two advances contribute to your overall company development strategy?

"The development of ASB can be defined by three axes: the first is commercial expansion. The creation of ATB Inc. aids us in meeting this objective, as it allows us to become a home supplier in the country which represents 60% of the world thermal battery market. The second axis corresponds to technological innovation: "smart" batteries illustrate our cutting-edge position and our commitment to pushing back the frontiers of thermal battery design. Coming product developments will extend our product range even further. Finally, the third axis is our aim to develop new fields of application: thermal batteries have been used almost exclusively in the defense market for a long time. They can however, be employed as the ideal response to emergency power supply needs, particularly under harsh operating conditions. The demand for power storage solutions is rising in all sectors: thermal batteries offer significant advantages which deserve to be exploited in diverse markets"

Capteurs 2006

ASB will contribute to the 5th edition of the Sensor Conference organised by the sensor & automation cluster and which will be held on the 18 & 19 october 2006 in Bourges.

ASB will participate to a session dedicated to power supply through a general presentation of thermal batteries and their application to sensors.

Thermal batteries withstand harsh environments in terms of temperature and mechanical stress. Therefore, thermal batteries are an ultimate power source for sensors operating in rough conditions.

Furthermore, thermal batteries can last over 10 years without any maintenance. Hence they can be used for autonomous systems which are difficult to maintain.

Hermetic sealing will be introduced in order to solve issues of electrical connection between heterogeneous environments. This technology use glass-to-metal seal which ensures an ultimate resistance to harshest conditions.

The 5th Sensor conference:

The 5th Sensor conference will be held on the 18th and 19th October in the "Faculté des Sciences" (rue Gaston Berger a Bourges) and will gather actors and users of sensor arena.

The 5th Sensor conference will address general themes and will be the opportunity to address latest progress of sensors research as wells as most recent developments.

The 5th sensor conference stimulates exchanges between beginners and experts, research agencies and industrial actors, distributors and users.

The 5th conference is opened to a wide public: manufacturers, designers, users, researchers and developers.

ATB

ASB, the European leader in the market of Thermal Batteries, opens a new company in USA, named ATB

ATB has acquired the assets and competences of the Thermal Batteries activities of Saft America. It is therefore located close to Baltimore (Maryland).

Being supported by the technologies & know-how of ASB, this new company offers the same standards of quality, product performance and customer service. Thanks to the existing technologies of Lithium-Aluminum, Lithium-Silicon and LAN (Lithium ANodes, an exclusive technology), ATB Inc. offers the broadest spectrum of solutions to meet the specific requirements of its customers.

ATB Inc. is a fully American company, in respect with the highest degree of safety regulation for the American Defense market. A complete range of services are offered in the field of the Thermal Batteries in USA: design, development, qualification, and manufacturing.

ATB Inc aims to become the key supplier of the Defense business in USA, by developing a close & continuous relationship with its customers.

ATB Inc is a subsidiary of ASB Aerospatiale Batteries. With plants in France and in Scotland with its subsidiary MSB, ASB is a result of the merging of the Thermal Battery activities of Aerospatiale and Saft groups in 1994. ASB products have contributed to the success of the most important aeronautics & defense programs in Europe, USA and worldwide. Recent research programs have been conducted to develop new families of Thermal Batteries, particularly well suited to Artillery shells & smart munition applications, as well as Emergency Power Supplies.

Thanks to its international structure, the ASB-Group is capable of offering its competences in USA and Europe, and to meet the need for trans-Atlantic industrial offsets.
